Mormons should be supportive of medical marijuana according to LDS doctrine

What does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints make of medical marijuana?  Surprisingly answers are breaking stereotypes in Salt Lake City.

Noah, a Mormon Missionary based inSalt Lake City, Utah (home base of the LDS church) and working this morning, answering online questions, was asked what the Church's opinion would be if medical marijuana were legal by a member of the grassroots organization Legalize Utah. 

"If there was an herbal medication that only serves to heal, to help people function"?

Noah's response?  "I don't know if the church has come out with an official statements, so this is entirely my opinion, but I think that it would be okay.  It seems like it would be a good purpose to for the plant".

A little research in the Book of Mormon (from the Doctrine and Covenants "Word of Wisdom" Section 89) shows that in a reported 'revelation' given through Joseph Smith, the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio on February 27, 1833:

"As a consequence of the early brethren using tobacco in their meetings, the Prophet was led to ponder upon the matter; consequently he inquired of the Lord concerning it.

Use of wine, strong drinks, tobacco, and hot drinks proscribed; Herbs, fruits, flesh, and grain are ordained for the use of man and of animals

  5 That in as much as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.

7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.

8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.

9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.

10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—

 

 

11 Every herbin the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.

12 Yea,flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;

It is apparent that the LDS church believes in the use of "wholesome herbs and fruits" in addition to the meat of wild animals and the grains in the fields has been ordained God ordained for the use of man and of beasts and that tobacco and "strong" drinks are "not good for man".

If medical marijuana  were made legal throughout the state, it appears the Mormons might be supportive of medical marijuana, based on their own doctrine and may very well be a key player when it comes to the legalization of herbal cannabis in Utah.
